The National Model Engineering and Modelling Exhibition 2003, Harrogate

After offering to help out Paul Middleton of Ride on Railways, I spent 3 pleasant days at this very good show. Lots of models, lots of clubs, a nice atmosphere. Yes, 3 days working on a stand at a show is hard work, but it was good fun too.

We got off to a good start, right inside the entrance to the show on the stand of the 7¼" Gauge Society was my favourite miniature locomotive, the East African Railways Garratt "Mount Kenya".

If you are interested, go to the page "miniature railways of my youth" for more information about this loco and why I have a soft-spot for it.

The only real opportunity to get a good shot of the loco was as they were clearing the hall out after the show as it came on a lorry and they needed a crane to move it. Not surprising really as it weighs over 2 tons.

Actually, there were a lot of interesting models on the 7¼" Gauge Society stand, including this ex-German class 52 Kriegslok in the livery of the Austrian Federal Railways. These were built during WWII as utility locos with many surviving long after the war in Austria and other European countries. Shame the tender wasn't there too.

Then there were these nice Irish narrow-gauge prototype wagons.

And a train of nice Welsh prototype narrow-gauge wagons, of which the real treat had to be...

... the Ffestiniog Railway Hearse Wagon - complete with miniature coffin. I didn't ask if there was anything in it.

Incidentally, these were all made by a "man of the cloth".

PS. Note use of 2 F's in Ffestiniog though "legally" Festiniog (with 1)  is the correct name of the railway.

I spotted this particularly nice model of Dolgoch on the stand of the York Society of Model Engineer's.

I have forgotten who's stand this Sweet Pea was on, but it was a lovely model.

But here on the corner of the Ride on Railways stand is my TROJAN - one of the reasons Paul wanted me to come along as he doesn't have an "industrial-bodied" TROJAN of his own to display.
