January 2004 Three cylinder oil fired DB Museum pacific 012 100-4, (01 1100), should by now be having the new PZB 90 safety system fitted at Meiningen Works. This will allow it to continue working Sonderzug on German main lines in 2004 and beyond. Steam locos without that system, which costs 26,000 Euros, are unlikely to be allowed to run on German main lines anymore.

January 2nd Bayerisches Eisenbahnmuseum at Nördlingen report all
three of their coal fired pacifics are due to work in the first part of 2004,
but only two cylinder 01 066 will be operational for the whole year. Bavarian
4 cylinder compound S3/6 is out of service from 10th April and two cylinder 03
2295 from June. Both are due for their main 8 yearly overhauls, (Hauptuntersuchung).
That of the 03.2 expected to take one year, and that of the much more
complicated S3/6 at least two years.
